In This Inventory Management Auto Battler You Fight With Your Backpack

Backpack Battles, a new Steam hit, is a Godot-based 2D inventory management PvP strategy game, where you take the role of an adventurer tasked with assembling the most powerful backpack to defeat their opponents.

Backpack Battles' roots can be traced back to 2022 when driven by the increasing popularity of auto battler games, the developer duo PlayWithFurcifer decided to introduce "a fresh perspective to the genre by integrating the concept of inventory management as a fundamental gameplay element". After months of work and a playable demo, Backpack Battles was officially released in Early Access last week, rapidly gaining popularity and Overwhelmingly Positive reviews from players.

Inventory management is the core mechanic of Backpack Battles, while players assume the role of various adventurers, tasked with assembling the most powerful backpack build. Players must consider the types, rarities, and placement of their items to create builds that can overpower their opponents. Each round you go up against a build made by another player, but it's fine to take your time, as there are no timers in the game.

The game offers a wide collection of items, such as weapons, potions, artifacts, and companions. These items also come in various rarities, from common to legendary, and can be acquired through several means, including purchasing in shops, crafting, or obtaining as a reward.

The key to success in Backpack Battles is in discovering powerful synergies between items and adapting to your opponents, with strategic thinking and experimentation being essential to win. You also have to keep an eye on the enemy's build and plan the items' placement in your own backpack to significantly improve their efficiency.

While there's a vast array of items in the game, builds differ greatly between classes. Each class has its own special equipment and even pets.

Currently, Backpack Battles features four classes:

  • Ranger, a character that has many items connected to nature and owns forest creature pets, uses bows and deals critical damage to the opponents
  • Reaper, a character that specializes in damage over time and uses poisons and cards against opponents
  • Berserker, a character that prefers heavy armor and weapons
  • Pyromancer, a fire-wielding magical class character with a dragon-looking pet

As for Early Access, the developers say the game will stay there for around 3 to 6 months, depending on the community input and the reception from players. The full version will feature the complete set of items with all 4 planned classes and the price will be slightly increased.

It's currently unknown if Backpack Battles will be available on other platforms besides PC. On the official Discord server, the developers noted, that it depends entirely on the success of the game since "the game needs to prove itself on PC before consoles are a realistic option".

"We already have a well-established community Discord with around 16,000 members. The community is actively involved in discussing mechanics, suggesting items, and balancing. Since our first demo, this game was developed in close collaboration with the community. We plan to continue a weekly content patch cycle, with hotfix patches in between", commented PlayWithFurcifer.
